Thoughts

As I began studying for this series, I asked God, “What are the things that are most concerning to people right now that we need to understand how to navigate through?” In response, one of the things God began to talk to me about was our thoughts – about how to keep them from taking us in the wrong direction. Throughout Scripture, we see that all the major biblical characters wrestled with this, starting with Eve in the Garden of Eden. In order to really do the Christian life, it is critical that we understand how powerful our thoughts are. Why? Because the things we dwell on in our minds come out in our words, and the words we speak strongly influence our actions. If we’re not careful and start dwelling on negative thoughts, those thoughts will download into our words and actions and start negatively affecting every area of our lives and that of others as well.

Most of us have to battle negative thoughts our whole lives. I’ll be honest with you; I have problems with my thoughts. It’s my biggest battle. My thoughts are constantly bombarding me with things that are completely contrary to God’s Word. The devil wants to get our minds to stop agreeing with God and get us focused on our emotions, our feelings. We have to get the victory over this, or we’ll go down. So many people are not doing the great things that God’s called them to do, because they haven’t learned to take charge over their thoughts.
We need to recognize that we’re in a battle, the number one battleground is our mind. How we deal with our thoughts will make the difference in whether the course of our lives go up or down. Let me ask you this: What do you spend the most time thinking about? What dominates your thoughts? Many people can’t change their lives, because their thoughts are dominated by negativity. If we can change our thoughts, our lives will change. So, how do we change our thoughts?
Romans 12:2 says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (NKJ) Our minds need to be renewed. This process starts by following three principles of thinking:
- What you put in is what comes out. We are byproducts of how we think. The things we dwell on become the filter through which we interact with life. We’ve got to get our minds focused on whatever is true, noble… (Phil 4:8-9)
- Submit your thoughts to God’s Word. Ask whether the things you meditate on agree with God’s Word. We have to decide if we’re going to serve the god of our feelings or the God of the Bible.
- Learn to speak God’s words over your thoughts. There’s tremendous power in our words. Death and life are in the power of the tongue. The only way Satan can get victory over you is by using circumstances to plant negative thoughts in our minds and then getting us to speak them out. We have to counteract this by speaking exactly what God’s Word says. Speak to the problem, not about it.
Let me encourage you to stop dwelling on your circumstances or your problems. Start meditating on the truth of God’s Word and what it says about your circumstances. Get it inside of you and then speak it out. As you do this, you will be amazed at how getting this foundation stone in place will dramatically change your life and the lives of many people around you!
