On December 22, 2011, fire broke out in the home of Edgar Reyes and Laura Herrera. As a blender on the
stovetop melted, a burner ignited the plastic and flames shot up to the ceiling. Laura had hopped in the shower, and the kids were playing inside. While the fire alarm activated, neighbors noticed the billowing smoke. They knocked on the door and pulled their two children out safely. Laura poured buckets of water on the flame while a neighbor doused it with a fire extinguisher. By the time the fire department arrived, the fire had been extinguished. The firemen deemed the home uninhabitable due to the thick smoke and proceeded to shut off the electricity.
Laura and Edgar had been attending Alex and Marivel Balderas’ VGroup for about three weeks. Laura was very open and enthusiastic at meetings, whereas Edgar was not so trusting. The two had been having strife in their relationship and, at the time of the fire, had not spoken for about a week. Laura’s immediate response to the fire was to inform the VGroup. When men from the VGroup arrived to help, Edgar was suspicious and said, “What are you doing here? I don’t have money to pay.”
Once they convinced him they were serving with the love of God and that they would not charge him, he let them in. These men worked tirelessly to repair holes, paint, and replace carpet and flooring. Families within Victory Vida donated a stove, a microwave, a crockpot, a blender, furniture, blankets and kitchen utensils. These families pooled together their skills and resources to make the home like new again. In the midst of the Christmas season, they willingly gave of their time and resources.
The selfless actions of this VGroup have affected numerous people in remarkable ways. Laura surrendered her life to Christ and was baptized in January. Edgar gave his heart to Christ and is thinking of getting baptized. He is active in the VGroup now and regularly breaks down in tears at the meetings. When their 4-year-old son exclaimed, “Daddy’s crying,” the leader’s response was “That’s God. He’s touching his heart.” According to one of the VGroup members, this experience let Edgar ”see that there is a God and that the VGroup represents God.” Laura and Edgar are seeking healing in their relationship through the “Married Forever” class. Having lived together for 10 years, they are making plans to sanctify their commitment to each other through marriage. Their 9-year-old daughter excitedly reports that “Mommy and Daddy are reading the book together.” The neighbors are baffled and have continually asked, “Who helped? How will you be paying for all this?”
This is the purpose of VGroups — to build community and to serve one another. Through the love of God, this VGroup rebuilt a scarred home after a fire and drove out the darkness of smoke that had lingered. In turn, Edgar and Laura are in the process of rebuilding their relationship on the solid foundation of Christ. Through the prayers and support of their Victory family, spirits of darkness will be driven out of their relationship, and they will move forward, united in Christ.
